Alertus Technologies is in the works to deliver 220 jobs to the city of Baltimore upon completion of its relocation to the “ticker” building downtown later this year. The company, originally based in Beltsville, acquired the glass and steel building that stands 4 stories high on 10 N. Charles Street in May 2021. Specializing in emergency mass notification systems, the company is planning to reinvent the establishment into a technology hub called the Center for Intelligent Buildings.
This location, known for its digital ribbon wrapping around its facade, was the original home of the Johns Hopkins Carey Business School until its migration to Harbor East back in 2010. Many organizations around the globe utilize the company’s technology to implement various notifications for warnings related to active shooters or others such as extreme weather.
The center will begin installing technologies to make all buildings intelligent, complete with surveillance, access control, intrusion detection, fire systems, and mass notifications.

The addition and relocation of jobs are projected to significantly boost the economy of Downtown Baltimore, a place that has notably suffered losses as a result of COVID-19. Back in 2020, it was projected that the city lost nearly 7,000 jobs and an over 23% office vacancy which is up 5 percent from 2019 in accordance with data issued by the Downtown Partnership of Baltimore.
To aid the company in its expansion, the State of Maryland is attempting to procure a conditional loan of $450,000 through Advantage Maryland, a federal program that funds investments, grants, and loans to support the development of the economy. Governor Larry Hogan has welcomed this move with open arms.
